In the Home series, Sterling Rook delves into the concept of home as both a physical space and a vessel of cultural memory. Drawing on his multiethnic heritage and memories of childhood, Rook’s structures combine rebar—a material common in Miami construction—with native and non-native palm fronds, such as the sabal, coconut, and foxtail palms, blending natural and fabricated elements. This approach engages with vernacular architecture, reflecting the ways local materials and cultural influences shape the spaces we inhabit.
Using vibrant hues reminiscent of South Florida and Caribbean homes, the series highlights a constructed paradise and the evolving idea of home. Each piece invites viewers to recontextualize dwelling and belonging, reflecting a hybrid identity rooted in multicultural experiences.
